  COOPERATIVE EDUCATION SYLLABUS

Liberal Studies 395
Summer 2008

Jones/Moran.............1038 CASL Building...............313.593.5188

CASL co-op students should keep in mind that Cooperative Education is an academic program, under the academic credit system, that gives students the opportunity to integrate classroom and work experiences. In general, students work no less than 2 co-op work terms, and more often 3 or more. For each semester of your co-op placement, you must register for LIBS 395.

If you received your placement from the CAS&L Co-op Program, you must continue to register for LIBS 395 as long as you work at that placement and meet CASL co-op requirements. However, it is important for co-op students to realize that no "return" or "continuing" is automatically guaranteed. At the time you are about to finish a work term, you should clarify with your job supervisor just what procedure the company has for considering your return or continuing assignment.

Note: You will need a new work packet and registration authorization slip for each co-op assignment.

Requirements of LIBS 395

FIRST DAY OF WORK - First day checklist is due.

May 5 - 18 -- Meet with on-the-job supervisor to discuss the Learning Objectives assignment you are writing. Make sure your supervisor agrees that your objectives are appropriate to the position. It is highly recommended that you give your supervisor a copy of your finished paper.

May 19 -- Submit Learning Objectives to CASL Co-op Office. Please submit at the office or by mail. Faxed papers are often difficult to read.

Exception for students on Parallel Part-time, two term (A/B) co-op: Learning Objectives are only needed for the "A" term of each co-op assignment.

June 9 - July 3 -- Appointments take place during this time for Mid-term Site Visit, at which both the student and supervisor must be present. Appointments are made by the Co-op Office. (Optional for returning or continuing co-op students, as determined by co-op director).

Week of July 21 -- Meet with supervisor regarding possibility of continuing the co-op assignment in the following term. Contact Co-op Director at the CASL Co-op Office about the results of the meeting. (If the employer's decision as to your returning or continuing is not finalized in time for early registration, register for courses in case re-hiring does not take place. Registration for LIBS 395 or drop/add procedures will be followed by the co-op office for you if a late hiring offer comes through).

Aug. 4 -- Employer must submit Evaluation of Co-op Student's Performance. A rating of satisfactory or better is required for completion of LIBS 395.

Aug. 4 -- Co-op student submits End-of-Term Evaluation Essay and Data Sheet.

August 22 , 2008 -- Students are expected to work until this date as it is the official end of the full summer term.
