The records of students enrolled in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters are reviewed at the end of each term. Three degrees of scholastic deficiency are used to identify a student’s unsatisfactory progress: probation, continued probation and denied continued enrollment (required to withdraw).
Probation
If a student’s cumulative GPA should fall below 2.00 at the
end of a term, the student is placed on "probation"
and a registration hold will be placed for the next term.
If the student’s cumulative GPA reaches 2.00 or better at
the end of this probationary term, the student is removed
from probation. However, if the cumulative GPA is even lower
at the end of the probationary term, the student would be
denied continued enrollment for the duration of at least one
year and may need to demonstrate his/her potential for readmission.
Continued Probation
If the cumulative GPA should show significant improvement but not yet reach 2.00 at the end of the probationary term, the student may be placed on "continued probation" for one or more terms. A student in this category has an academic hold placed on registration and will not be allowed to register again until all grades for the continued probation term are received and reviewed. If the student achieves a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better at the end of this term, the academic hold and probation are removed. If the student should fail to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better, the student will normally be denied continued enrollment for the duration of at least one year and may be required to demonstrate his/her potential for readmission. In extraordinary cases, a student might be permitted to register for a second term in the continued probation category. Normally, a student may be in the continued probation category for only two terms.
Denied Continued Enrollment/Required to Withdraw
As explained above, a student may be denied continued enrollment at the end of any probationary term in which the cumulative GPA does not reach 2.00, if the student is clearly not making progress. Students in this situation would normally not be allowed to reregister for the duration of at least one year, and may need to demonstrate the potential for readmission to the University.
Students on academic probation are notified of their official academic
standing, and any impending registration holds, as soon as
administratively possible. All students who are experiencing academic or
other difficulties are urged to consult an academic advisor, or other
appropriate resource persons, at the first sign of difficulty. Further
information may be obtained from the CASL Office of Advising and Student
Records, 1091 CA.
