  ABOUT DEBORAH SMITH POLLARD


Deborah Smith Pollard, Ph.D. Michigan State University. Prof. Pollard, an Americanist specializing in African American literature and culture, joined the UM-D faculty in September 1995 with a dual appointment in English and Humanities. The director of the African and African American Studies Program, she teaches several AAAS courses, as well as other classes in literature, humanities and expository writing. Among her AAAS courses are

       

            --AAAS/Eng 239 Introduction to African American Literature
            --AAAS/Eng 389 The Odyssey of Black Men in America
            --AAAS/Eng 469 Twentieth Century African American Literature
            --AAAS/Hum/WS 470 Voices of Black Women in Literature, Film, and Music

Her research interests and published writings focus upon African American literature and the gospel music industry, including gospel musical stage plays and gospel announcers (radio personalities). Her research is also reflected in a travelling exhibit called "Lest We Forget: Legends of Detroit Gospel," on which she collaborated with Michigan State University Museum's Traditional Arts Program. In her other life, Prof. Pollard is a successful gospel concert producer (The Motor City Praisefest and the McDonald's GospelFest) as well as a popular gospel announcer who can be heard Sundays from 6 - 10 AM on Detroit's leading urban station, FM 98 WJLB.
